Independent living skills for SEND and SEMH young adults in Loughborough.
Are you a young person with SEND or SEMH who wants support to help you live more independently? Or maybe you’re a parent or carer for someone looking to take those next steps towards living alone with confidence?
In both situations, we have you sorted.
Tigers Eye Pathway is a supportive, student-led programme, designed to help you build confidence and develop the skills you need to live more independently at home and in the community.
We want to help you thrive. Alongside tailored support, you will work towards entry-level Maths and English qualifications, gain practical life skills, and take steps towards a more independent and empowered future, whatever life brings your way.
Why are independent living skills important?
Cracking question. There are so many benefits when young people with SEND and SEMH work at living more independently, including:
- Building up your confidence and believing more in your abilities
- Helping you to make more choices and take control of your life
- Looking after your mental health and wellbeing
- Helping you to build stronger relationships, communicate with more confidence, and feel part of your community
- Being confident to solve problems when they come your way
- Helping you to think things through and take responsibility for your choices
Independent living services for SEND and SEMH students
We deliver the following with our tried and tested Tigers Eye programme:
Purpose and approach
With Tigers Eye, we’ll work on your independent living skills, focusing on emotional stability, personal confidence and practical everyday tasks. We’ll also make sure that you have the right academic skills, and help you work towards entry-level Maths and English qualifications.
There is no one size-fits-all approach, as we understand that everyone is different. We take on an individualised approach based on Educational, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs), working towards each personal goal and target.
Therapeutic and emotional support
To best support you and your goals, access to the correct support is important. Each student has access to an onsite speech and language therapist, as well as an Emotional Literacy Support Assistant (ELSA), occupational therapy and a talking therapist, who is available for emotional support.
Skills and life preparation
We cover all the essential skills and life preparation by focusing on:
- Making sure you understand personal care
- Working on your social skills
- Focusing on shopping and cooking skills
- Making sure you understand how to travel safely
- Being an active member of the community
- Knowing how to communicate with others
- Exploring any sensory challenges
- Offering therapeutic support when needed
Curriculum and assessment
We use practical learning programmes, such as ASDAN Key Steps, New Horizons, and Life Skills Challenges, to help you build real-world skills in a way that is flexible, engaging and suited to your needs.
The core subjects we cover are Maths and English at entry-level.
At Pathways Provision, we follow a flexible and personalised learning plan using the MAPP system (Mapping and Assessing Personal Progress), so we can track how you’re progressing, celebrate your wins, and continuously support your growth in a way that works for you.
We also keep track of your progress through regular check-ins and work closely with your support network, including family, carers and other professionals, as this helps us ensure you’re getting the right help and always moving in the right direction.
Learning environment
We pride ourselves on offering students a safe, nurturing space for role play, games and social interaction. By doing this, we can help to better promote self-awareness, relationship skills and, most importantly, independence.
Supporting parents and carers
We understand that it’s important to support parents and carers too. The whole support network matters and that includes the wider family. Book in regular in person meetings or pick up the phone to speak to one of the team, we’re always here for you. We hold Family Fun Days, so you can get to know staff in a calm and fun environment, and regular Parent Days, so you can discuss your child’s progress in a relaxed environment.
Tigers Eye aim
To widen interest, support social interaction, and involve families in their learning journey.
